Stripped Fill plugs

I have a used 91 ford. Both my transfer case and rear axel are leaking a bit. I planned to add more fluid this weekend.. but noticed that both fill plugs are stripped.

From what I can tell.. they were supposed to accept a 1/2 driver from a socket wrench or extension... does that sound about right?

If and when I get these out.. where do I find a replacement? It seems that the 2 auto stores near me, don't stock the part.

I'm pretty sure they are 3/8 inch drive....

and I'd get my replacement at a junkyard.

But then again I'm cheap and can't see paying dealership prices or paying more in shipping than the thing is worth.

They are 3/8 drive. I'm sure a decent parts store can match them up if you bring them in. The replacement plug might not be 3/8 drive it may have a 1" hex head for example but it would work either way. Every shop i have worked at has had bins of different sized generic drain plugs. Another option is to weld a nut onto the end of the plug.

It is an aluminum plug stock, so welding won't work. I drove a sharpened square bit of steel in there and turned them out on the '88s stripped plugs. Went to home depot and got some 80cent brass pipe plugs.
