Wire connections to starter relay
I am looking for where the fusible link goe to the starter relay??? Post 1 with the battery cable or post 4 with the starter cable? I know it goes over to the alternator. What is the best way to check this connection to see if it is working....ie continuity check? Engine won't stay running and lights don't come on......tried to start with a remote starter but engine will only run while starter is running.....as soon as I let go of the remote grip the engine stops....
:o Ok found out from other ford truck board that fusable link goes on battery post side of relay........ changed that over.....have lights now.....but kinda dim..... charged battery again..... tried to start but just got a click with key...tried remote starte with key in on position....same ..... but heard a strange humming in the voltage reugulator......would go away while trigger was held but when released the humm would come back...... Possible bad voltage reg? Would that stop the truck from starting? Thinking about trying to jump :o start with spare battery with both charged up........ got it to turn before like that..... good Idea?
Well try the jump..... still no go...... lick was all I got...... so I pulled the starter since the relay tested good..... took to advance auto for test..... it spun right up...... tested good......I checked the voltage going to the starter....there is a problem....... on the cable end that connects to the starter I was getting only 7.55 volts....... when I checked straight from the starter post on the relay it was 8.33 volts........ what would be stealing the volts in between the battery to the starter relay? I checked the ground cable. for continuity to the connection to the engine block it read good. Even disconnected the ground cable and grounded the battery with booster cables connected to the ground terminal and two different body grounds..... still the same......Can you order the wire bundle that goes to the alternator or would the problem be elsewhere?
you know trhat sounded like a good idea....... so I went out and got a replacement cable....... funny thing was I used a multi meter on the old cable...from ground battery post to end of postive cable that was connected to the starter relay before I swapped them out....... it read exactly what the battery was reading....... 12.33 volts....... so something tells me there is something wrong somewhere else.......
You just finished saying that the voltage at the starter end of the cable was 7.55 volts. Now you're saying it's 12.33 volts. You're going to have to make up your mind if you want any help.

Ok..... when I removed the starter........ I measured the voltage form the starter end of the cable..... it was 7.?? volts...... then I read the same cable but on the top end that connects to the starter relay..... it read 8.55 volts wgen I engaged the remote starter....... The other day I measured the voltage from the postive cable connection to the starter relay...... it measured the same as the battery from pos to negative.......12.33 volts.....so something after the battery but before the startter is stealing voltage......starter relay?? Fusible Link going to alternator? or other wires going there......ie two small wires connected to relay???
I hope you mean you had 12.33 volts when you connected the test probe to the negative battery post and the relay, not the positive post. Anyway, I stand behind what I already said; the positive battery cables. The voltage you "lost" was because you engaged the starter relay when testing.
Well the truck is running again....... I thank everbody for their help....... seems that there was some wires at the starter coil disconnected...... and I replaced the positive battery cable and the negative terminal lug...... have a few burnt out bulbs in the dash I need to work on and reconnect the radio again...... but hopefully the starting trouble is over......that starter was a pain to get off and on.....top bolt a sob.... .......
Hey what are those tubes in the wheel well? and are they suppose to be pinched off at the bottom?
