well a while back my speedometer went bad, i got under it to find the sensor and no luck, its not on the rear of the transfercase like i thought
does anyone have a clue as to where it is
its a 96 f-150 4x4 with a 302, it has a digital odometer too
i bought the speed sensor for it but i cant see anything that looks similar to the new part

The VSS sensor is on the top of your rear diff.

Yup easy to unbolt and clean off, or if need be replace. Best case possible.

Worst case is the tone ring in the diff went bad and you gotta tear the rear apart.

You guys have just almost described EXACTLY the problem that started two days ago with my truck, which happens also to be a 96 F150 4X4 with a 302.

I say almost, because the jumping, sometimes not working at all speedo is accompanied by the ABS light. I assume they're connected, and that's how it's sensing impending lockup of the rear wheels.

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and RABS (rear anti-lock brake sensor) are the same device on a 96.
