351M to inline 6 swap

I want to get rid of the tired old 351M in my 77 f-150 and swap in a 1992 inline 6. The 351M has already been rebuilt several times in its life and i have an inline 6 that i keep tripping over in the garage. So a few questions, will the I6 bolt up to the C6? Was the I6 available in the 77 f-150? I can fabricate the mounts if needed but it would be easier if i could just bolt the thing in.

I can easily make the fuel injection work but i want this thing to be simple to troubleshoot and repair when offroading so i am wondering if the intake manifold off of an older carburated I6 will bolt on?

a 351M is a big block and a 300 6 is a small block so they have different bell housing bolt patterns. a 351m is the same as a 400

i'm pretty sure the tranny will bolt up..

i had a '85 E-350 with the I-6 300 with a C-6 in it (i rebuilt the tranny)

but you may have an issue with the rear gears maybe being a little too "stiff" for a 6 banger...

just a thought..

The gears should be all right. The truck the I6 came out of had 3.09's in it. I plan on installing a Clifford torque monster camshaft, headers and intake to give it a little more pull.

The inline 6 uses a different bolt pattern for the bell housing.
a 351M's (335 series engines) bellhousing pattern is the same as 429/460 (big blocks)
A 300, 302 and a 351W all use the same (small block)

Yeah, your gonna need a different tranny as the 351M is a different pattern than a 300, 302, and 351W.

However the 300 will just bolt right in if you get the mounts for your 77. The I6 was used even back to the 60s so there are plenty of 70s trucks that had the 300.

Also do you plan on converting your 92's 300 to carb, or custom building and EFI system?

I will probably convert it to carb for now. I want to do a custom efi setup for it eventually but right now i have a couple different projects so i want to do this one on the cheap.

Heres another thought, i have a extra 4wd C6 here that was bolted to a 351W. Will my transfer case switch over to the other C6? In other words was the boltpattern for the back of the trans the same regardless of what the bellhousing boltpattern was?

Thanks,
-Jon
