Best Exhaust for an I6?

I own a 1989 Ford F150 with the 4.9L I6, 4spd with granny low, 4X4, 4.10 gears, & it's a standard cab long box with only 69,000 miles on it. I'd say that's a pretty damn good truck for $1,000. I was wondering what would be the best route for exhaust on that truck. I would really like to have a throaty cackle type of exhaust that doesn't sound like a rice burner. I've got the stock exhaust on it now besides a glasspack that replaced the muffler & it's got a putter sound to it & it would be really nice to somehow get a throaty exhaust at a decent price.

I've heard the best sounding for these is to gut the cats and run a flowmaster series 40. I to have a I6 in a 1994. I haven't got around to it, but I am going to do that same thing.

I second the Flowmaster vote. While I have never cared for them on a V8, they have sounded good on every 6-cylinder I've ever heard em on.

I bought and installed an Edelbrock cat back system on my truck, and am pleased with it. It sounds a lot better than stock, but it's not obnoxious. Everyone is always surprised to find out I have a straight six rather than a V8. It improved my fuel economy, too.

I have the flowmaster 40 system on my 4.9 and I'm not complaining. It blew me away when I first installed it but now I'm use to it.

I went with a 2.5" Flowmaster 70 catback and a high flow Catco 9513 cat on my 300. I wanted to remain smog compliant and fairly quiet but with a better tone. I'm satisfied with it.

What size pipes did you use & did you gut the cat or just leave it?

What if I were to just replace the glasspack with a Flowmaster 40 & not do the dual outlet? Would it have the same sound or no?

Anyone have any idea what the Gibson super truck exhaust would sound like on an I-6. I too have an I-6 and don't want to get something that would sound like a riceburner.
