96 F150 engine specs

Hi,

I am looking at buying a '96 F150, advertised with a 5lt V8. However i can not find any info egarding this engine in this truck. All i can find is info on the 4.9lt I6. Did these trucks come with a V8 at all? And if so, what are the HP and torque specs.

I am also looking at a '98 Dodge (i hope thats not a banned word here ) Ram. The 5.9 has 245HP and 345lb/ft of torque. The I6 in the F150 is no where near that. If the 5Lt V8 has similar specs to the Ram, i'd buy it.

TIA for any info.

Hello and welcome,

yes the f150 did come with a 5.0 v8 (sometimes referred to as the 302 for its cubic inch output. I do not know the horsepower, but can certify it is a good longlasting engine-- though arguably not as longlasting as the 4.9l.

Here's the specs from my Chilton's manual:

4.9l I6:
150hp @ 3400rpm
260tg @ 2000rpm
Sequential port fuel injection
EPA 14/18mpg 2wd auto

5.0l V8:
199hp @ 4200 rpm
270tq @ 2400rpm
Sequential port fuel injection
EPA 14/18mpg 2wd auto

5.8l V8 (closest to the Ram 5.9 you're looking at):
210hp @ 3600rpm
325tq @ 2800rpm
Sequential port fuel injection
EPA 13/17mpg 2wd auto

5.9 Ram (for comparison):
245hp @ 4000rpm
330lb-ft @ 3250rpm
Sequential port fuel injection
EPA 12/17mpg 2wd auto

If you do choose the Ram, I say from experience you're well advised to stay away from the 318/5.2l V8, it's pertty lacking in torque. The 5.0 Ford feels a ton torquier than the 5.2 Dodge on the street. The 4.9 I6 is actually a torque demon, but not very fun to drive. Haven't driven the 5.8l/351 Ford or the 5.9/360 Dodge though.
