1989 F150, 5.0 to 5.8 swap
1989 F150, 5.0 to 5.8 swap
Hi, my name is Jim. I am in the process of restoring my F150, it is currently stripped down to a rolling chassis. I have a 5.8 from a 1991 van and i want to rebuild it to put in my truck. Has anyone got any idea of some problems i might run into ?? such as wiring harness issues or anything. I have the ECU from the van which i plan to use. Also before i rebuild the motor, does anyone have any good recomendations as far as what would be a good cam to use for towing and still have decent fuel milage ? I am new to this site and i know i just asked alot of questions, but any advice is greatly apreciated.
The engine itself is a direct swap. All accessory brackets, and motor mounts are the same. Only thing is, you will need a new belt, and the 5.8 has the firing order different from the 5.0. I'm not sure what year they both shared the same order. The 5.8 is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 counter clockwise on the distributor. If yours is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, you may need the engine harness from the 5.8 donor. Good luck.

The firing order is like the 5.0 HO motors. How much money are you planing to into the motor. Id check Comp cam or Eldbrock. If you getting heads check out AFR heads. I have a 92 F150 that can with a 5.8 and this is what im looking at in the future on mine.
