Stall Speeds

Well my 4R70W finally gave up the ghost last week. When I get it rebuilt I want to put in a Torque convertor with a higher stall speed. What I don't know is what I have now and how high I can go? I would like to see a marked improvement at the track, but I would still like to be able to tow a trailer occasionally. The truck has a 302 with a crane 2020 cam, ported factory heads, edelbrock upper and lower, bbk dual 56mm TB, underdrive pulleys, roller rockers, 1 5/8" shorty headers, FIPK, and the old tranny had a level 10 shift kit. Best 1/4 mile of 16.1, but hoping to improve upon that shortly. Thanks for any suggestions.

I went from a stock converter to a 2200 stall in my 4R70W and it netted me .2 quicker 60' times. I want a little more, I would recommend a 2500, it would work great, and should drive like stock.

Just curious....... for the mods you listed I thought your truck would run alot better. I ran 15.937@83.98 with air filter, pulleys, exhaust, 2200 stall & Shift Kit. What were the conditions at the track like?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. The times seemed a little slow, but I have ordered the 2500 rpm stall convertor, hopefully that will help. I am also switching from 3.08 gears to 3.73, hopefully that will help a little more. I have only had it at the track once and it was about 90 degrees out. Some time was probably lost to an inexperienced driver also.

I am thinking about getting a custom chip. Any input on where to get the best deal and best performance would be a big help. Guesses on power increase would be interesting also. Thanks for all the help.

i put a 2500 stall converter in my 4R70W and i works great. the only thing is the performance shop that built it recommended that i did not tow, haul, pull, you know things like that because it would burn up the transmission. also i would recommend that you put in a trans cooler cuz the stall converter produces the most heat on the trans and i dont think you would want your newly rebuilt trans to burn up and lock up on you. about the chip i talked to a custom chip shop and they said that if you really do not have any drinving problems that they would not purchase one cuz i dont know if you have looked into purchasing one but down here in florida one for my 94 F150 is about $700 with dyno tuning. they said that it would produce a little more horsepower but nothing real big. hope that helps.
