6-8 Mpg. Help!

My buddy has a 95 F150 Long Bed with the 302. His truck was/is running real crummy (stalling at intersections, rough idle, etc.). He checked his mpg and he is getting 6-8 MPG. He is replacing the air filter, spark plug wires and plugs. Neither of us believe this will fix the problem, but they were due.

The question is, what is the problem? No trouble codes, he has the reader. It is leaking oil and the thermostat is good. My best guess is the O2 Sensor.

A second question is the warm up time. We car pool and it takes like 5-6 miles stop and go to get any heat. What's up with that?

Thanks for any help.

That's about how long my truck takes to get heat, but it's a good deal older and crummier. I would say to just give the engine a general tune up, all the filters/fluids, new plugs and maybe wires, a cap and rotor, just things like that. I don't know for sure, but I thought that the O2 sensor would throw a code if it went bad, wouldn't it?

You would think it would show a code. We speculated that the light on the check engine light may be burnt out also.

hhotrod your o2 sensor sends a signal to your pcm by reading the amount of air in the exhaust compared to the atmosphere, if the truck is running lean it will send a rich signal to the pcm to richen the a/f ratio and vice-versa if its runnig rich the signal will be lean to the pcm.now the first thing i would check, is if there is any exhaust leaks before the sensor, because when driveing the exhaust will creat a vacume and draw atmosphere into the exhaust makeing it lean, second you must first get the sensor up to temp around 600 degs thats when the pcm will go into closed loop to check the o2 sensor to see if its good, get a volt meter set it on Mv if not auto rangeing and check the voltage comeing from the o2 sensor by back probeing the plug with some t pins. the max voltage range is 0v to 1v....normal range is 100mv to 900mv and 450mv being perfect a/f ratio. a high voltage above 450mv is a rich signal and the a/f ratio is lean in the exhaust any below 450 is a rich a/f ratio and is sending a lean signal. an easy way to get the o2 sensor to read rich is to take a plug wire off and ground it and make the a/f rich. to lean it out unplug an injector to see if it leans out. you will need to see what type of o2 sensor you have 1 wire or two or three and find the signal wire.i hope i helped
