Forward fuel tank
Forward fuel tank
Hello All,
I an the proud new owner of a 1994 F-150XL. 4.9L, automatic.
The truck is equiped with dual tanks, the problem is the forward
tank will not take fuel. It acts like the tank is full when I try to
put gas in it. When I select the forward tank with the switch the
fuel gage reads empty and the engine dies. When the rear tank
is selected all is normal. The rear tank takes fuel normally also.
Thanks in advance........................................... ........AL T.

I agree that you should check and see if it sounds like there's anything in it. I know when I first bought my truck, I sometimes had a hard time getting the front tank to take any fuel, but over time, I just developed a 'feel' for it, and now don't have any problems. Keep trying, maybe at a different gas station.
Check for a Ford recall on the dual fuel tank selector also. Ford had a problem with these. The first problem was it would let fuel from one tank pump into the other tank. The other problem was it would stick in one position.
Select the front tank and turn the key to the on position. You should be able to hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds and shut off.
I would say it's one of three things.
1. the fuel selector
2. the fuel pump and level gauge
3. or the tank is empty.

Thanks all for the replies,
I got to check the forward tank today, it's full.
I'm want to check the switch first since both
the pump and the gage are dead.

I have a similar problem. I just bought a 93 F-150 with dual tanks, the rear works fine, takes fuel and the gauge reads. The front however takes fuel, but reads empty. It stays running fine when I switch tanks, but I have no idea how to measure my fuel consumption on the forward tank.

I have the same problem with the front tank.....I just fill it and use the trip guage to let me know how many miles I've gone. My truck is a 3rd vehicle so as long as it works I don't really care. But if it ever stops working properly I would like to know if any of you guys figure it out.
