speedo broken !?
alright... i just bought an 88 f150 5.0 5spd
the speedo doesnt work on it.. i saw it twitch out once, but thats about it .... i need to get the truck emissions tested so i can register it... SOON ... so i need some help quick
ive never fixed one of these... any help would be useful, ie .. what kind of different problems could this be ? the cable, a sensor? i have no clue
thanks guys ....
i talked to my friend that works at porsche ... he said the cable is on the tranny towards the rear... pull out the gear and see if its broken... if not.. take it off, and hook up a drill to the cable and spin it and see if the needle moves...if it doesnt then take out the instrument panel and work from there.. does this sound correct?
im going to dig in to it today after work?
would a local schucks have the gear if its broken, i dont want to spend that much at a dealer?

My '95 doesn't have a cable, so I really don't know how yours is set up, but odds are it's just like your friend suggested. If it's a cable, it will be the only one that goes into the back of the tranny on a 90 degree angle. You'll have to call your local auto parts stores and see if anyone has it. I kinda doubt they will, but if anyone would, other than Ford, it would be Napa.
Good luck!
Good luck!
I had the exact same problem w/ my '95 F150 5.8L. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor on the top of the rear differential and it has worked like a champ ever since. It should cost you about $15 and it takes 3 minutes to put in.
thx
i replaced the gear in the tranny since the old one had some dips in the teeth
it fixed it.. yet, it only gives an accurate reading when im not on the gas, or the clutch .. if im on either, the speed drops down.. at most it goes 10 mph down .. its odd...
so my next replacement is the vss...ill keep you guys in touch with that
my temp gauge and oil pressure gauge dont work on the inst cluster.. all the gauges were out but most just needed a fuse, any idea on why those two arent working?
thanks for all your help you guys... its a beater, so im going to be doing a decent amount of maintenance to it.. puttin a new pcv in tonight... bleh, seattle rain ..
haha . thanks again .. any help is greatly appreciated

With the key ON, have someone unplug the wire to the oil pressure sending unit (behind the filter), and jump it to ground. If the oil pressure gauge moves to the max, you need a new sending unit. If it doesn't move, the problem is likely the gauge itself. The same is true for the temp sending unit & gauge (test it the same way).
