gas mileage in a 1990-1998 F250 diesel 4x4

Hello there,

I am looking at buying a used f250 or f350 (1990-1998) crew cab 4x4. I am wondering what kind of gas mileage I can expect out of this truck with a diesel? Or the 460 v8? With the automatic vs. a 5 speed?

Thanks,
Wesley

Just an indication on the 460. Mine (new/88) EFI F250 5sp. 4X4 w/3:73's, best ever solo 12 1/2 mpg. Heavy hauling 8 mpg.

As I recall then, a/t gave about 1 1/2 -2 mpg. less, along w/big drop in HP. 460 was a great engine, really loves gas. May have gotten better over the yrs, but I doubt not much. JMO!

Diesels generally get better mpg. My friends 98 F 250 CC 4X4 a/t gets (solo) 17 mpg. Some more/some less. Just like new 6L's.
Just like gasser, should get better mpg w/manual tranny.

Lots of variables for sure. Look for updates.

Good luck....OT

the 460 measures fuel consumption in blocks per gallon!

My cousin gets a new diesel Ford every 2 years. The early 7.3 WITHOUT the intercooler gets better mileage than WITH the intercooler. I'm not sure why, just his observation as he driven these things for the past 14 years.
