A/C Clutch Question

I have a 96 F150 5.0 and I noticed lately that when I have the heater on, the A/C clutch runs and the condenser cools down and it drips water, for example, if i have the heater control on "mix" and the temp control on hot the a/c system still runs, if I switch it over to A/C it is freezing cold right off, no waiting , I'm not sure if the system is suppose to run all the time, but if I switch the heater control to off the clutch stops, isn't the A/C system only suppose to come on when it is turned to A/C or Max A/C by the control or is it suppose to be running when the heater is on??? This can't be helping my gas mileage any... Please help

The A/C clutch in engaged in A/C, heat and defrost. It is disengaged in off and vent. If you want heat without running the clutch, put the selector in vent and get heat out the dash vents.

Or rewire the heater-A/C controls
