Tranmission Problems
Tranmission Problems
I have a 1995 F-150 V-8, 5.0 with about 164,000 miles on it. The transmission or the torque converter is acting up. When I get to around 45 mph or so, and try to give it gas the truck acts like I have it in neutral and the engine races, so I have to let the truck slow down to around 35 mph or so. It also made a hard grinding sound and almost stopped moving. The over drive light is flashing all the time now. Before it did this today, on ocassion it would act like it was stumbling while driving up a grade, but nothing as bad as today. I need some help.
Thanks,
David

Is the color of the trans fluid still pink or is it dark? If it's not pink then at some time the trans overheated (above 220-240) and the clutch pac is burnt and will need a rebuild. The torque converters do go out but they act a little differently than what you described. Does not sound good
Any time you here grinding in the trans it's usually terminal. Sounds to me there might be a problem with the o/d planetary gear set. You can turn off the overdrive and try to drive it for awhile but if it is a problem with the gear set itself there will be metal throughout the trans. You might want to drop the pan and see what kind of debris is in there. Good luck.
