Black Flakes in Oil

Guys:

I posted this on F150 World as well, so pardon the repeat if you saw my message there.

I was hauling up a mountain recently and noticed a lack of power, but since I was in a higher gear than usual I wrote it off at the time. However, next time I checked my oil levels-two days later-I found black flakes in my oil. Looks like carbon buildup, probably from blow-by. Any opinions here as to what's up? I am fearing a piston ring gone bad...

Also, I have a K&N FIPK, so I don't have the crankcase filter that usually comes on the truck.

Any help is much appreciated.

later

scott

I can't imagine how carbon would get into the oil. Sure it's not gummed up oil? Or maybe some crap fell into the catch pan while draining?
