Transmission swap in a '81 f-150

My '81 F150 has a 351W (swapped in from a 300) and a column shifted 3 speed manual. I would really like to have overdrive and or more gears or something, and better fuel mileage. Are there any options as to swappable manual transmissions. I love my old truck but its time to upgrade. I also thought about a C6 auto but would like to stick with a manual and preferably one with a non hydraulic clutch because that seems like that would turn into a pain it the butt to swap. Can the mazda 5 speed be converted to manual clutch? I am open to suggestions.

If you're truck has manual clutch linkage, a nice swap would be a Tremec 4-speed top loader. Memory is telling me FOMOCO code RAT. This Rat should bolt on exactly where You're RUG came out of. If you acquire the shifter from the donor vehicle, all required would be the driveshaft shorten and balance.

Tremec, RAT, used from 1976 to around 1979 "E" and "F" series. You will need one out of an "F" series (cross member mounting should be in exact location as RAT 3-speed). The RAT should be in the neighborhood of 20% O/D.

Avoid the 435 New Process (aluminum shift cover) and T18, T19 Borg Warner transmissions. They are direct drive, non-O/D; some people refer to these as "granny gear" 4-speeds.

That sounds like just the ticket.... so all I would need is the shifter out of a pickup to tie up that end? Thanks for the help
