351W measurements

Anyone have a 351W on a stand in there garage? I need to know how far it is from the center of the motor mount to the back of the block where the trans meets up to the engine. I need to measure for my new crossmembers. I have the tranny here but the engine is still at my old shop a couple hours away and i won't be able to get to it for a few more weeks.

Thanks,
-Jon

Do you have a 302 or 4.9...or any motor in the truck currently? The 302 is just a shorter smaller stroke 351W so in theory you should be able to just measure a 302 for the specs you need.

What exactly are you swapping from and to?

I swapping from a 4.9L, E40D trans, 2WD to a 351W, C6 trans 4X4. I need to postion the new tubular xmembers before i box in the frame. I have the new motor mount towers from JBG welded in, they sit about 6 inches back from the 4.9L mounts.

13" on my 302 (16.5" to the center of the forward mount, and 9.5" to the center of the rear mount).

Ah okay nice. I was not aware there was that much fabrication necessary to swap from the 4.9 to a 302/351. What year is the truck the 4.9 and E4OD are coming from?

The truck, I6, and e40d are 1992. The 351W block and the c6 trans is from an '84 bronco. Normally there isn't much fabrication involved in a swap like this but going from 2wd to 4wd complicates things, plus i'm fabricating all my own crossmembers that will be more ridgid then the factory stamped steel ones. The only things still factory on this truck are the frame rails, the cab, and part of the bed!

Thanks Pkrwud!

I have pictures but my scanner isn't cooperating right now

Darn! I'm looking for an E4OD core and I think that I'll need an 89-91 version. Does your '92 have the speedo output in the tailshaft?

I'm going with a 408 or 427 in my truck fairly soon which depends on what block I go with (gonna run an AFR headed cammed roller 302 for a while until I get the supporting stuff ready like the trans and some other odds and ends) and need the capacity the E4OD can provide when built. I'm going through it with the help of my buddy. I dont' feel like going with a non-lockup AOD due to higher cruise RPMs also.

My speedo output is from the rear diff, via the rear abs sensor. I looked at my trans though and it has a plastic block-off plate in the tailshaft/extension housing with a single bolt holding it in. It looks like thats where a speed sensor could go???

Pkrwud, thanks for the measurement. Since the new motor mount towers attach to the back of the factory cross member (5" further back then the factory mounts) it looks like the rear of the 351w is going to going to end up in the same spot as the 4.9L afterall. The 4.9L is 18" from center of mount to edge of bellhousing. 18" - 5" gives me the 13" you measured. Now i just have to measure for the difference in the trans mount location between the E40D and the C6.

Hmmmmmmm... so it could be that a majority of the E4OD's have the hole in the tailshaft for the VSS's of the 89-91 trucks? That gives me WAY more hope in what I am trying to achieve. That's also where that speedo gear must go for the mechanical gauge cluster too.

BTW... what are you planning to do with that E4OD of yours?

HitMan: I don't have any plans for it, it's just taking up space in my shop right now. It has 108K on it, drives good, no slippage, but it does have a really harsh 3-2 downshift when hot, which could be an electrical solenoid or accumulator type problem.

I'm interested in it is why I am asking. Does it happen to be a 4x4 E4OD?

No, it's 2wd. Usually you just have to remove the extension housing and replace the output shaft to convert it to 4wd. I've never done it on an e40d though so i'm not sure what would have to be done.

Yeah the rear output shaft is different and my conclusions are that you need entire teardown to install a 4x4 output shaft sadly. At least on an AOD that's how to swap output shafts...

I got all the measurements worked out today. If anyone ever switches from a I6, e40d, 2wd setup to a 351W, C6 4x4 drivetrain w/ L&L motor mount towers, the trans crossmember needs to come forward exactly 6".
