Fuel Injectors
Fuel Injectors
hey guys, I am in need of new fuel injectors.
I have a few questions:
1) Do they make high performance injectors?
2) If so, how does it affect fuel economy?
3) Do all of them make a really loud ticking noise?
4) Are certain brands quieter then other brands.
95' 351 EFI multiport.
Thanks,
Pete

1) Yes. They are the same as the regular injectors but come in a package marked "high-performance." They are allegedly more closely matched fot thruput.
2) Not at all
3) Define loud. They all tick. They shouldn't be audible with all the other stuff going on in the top of your engine.
4) Possibly.
First of all you can have your injectors cleaned and rebuilt if there is a shop that does injector service in your area. If not just buy Bosch injectors at the parts store - that's who Ford buys them from.

1) You can get injectors that are rated for higher fuel flow (in pounds per hour). Unless you have modified the engine for higher airflow they aren't really necessary.
2) The computer will always adjust the injector pulse width to get the air/fuel ratio it wants, unless the injectors are so large the computer has to back off the fuel trim by more than 20% then you will get a check engine light. New, or freshly cleaned injectors could give you better fuel economy because they will have better fuel atomization then the old ones.
3 and 4) Pretty much, yes. Actually some injectors you can here with the hood closed and the engine running. Thats why most new cars have all those plastic covers on the engines, to keep people from hearing the injectors.

So what is this ticking noise you speak of? My engine makes kind of a clacking noise that is audible from outside the truck with the hood closed at slow idle. It kind of sounds like it could be the lifters, but I always hear it, even right after an oil change. It doesn't sound like it would be the injectors, but I've been trying to figure out this mystery noise for a while now and...well, sometimes you discover the darndest things.
Screwdriver works great too, just watch out for moving parts!
TF - The inectors will make a little bit sharper of a tick then lifters. It is just noise from the pintle in the injector slamming around as the power to the injector coils are turned on and off by the ecu.

Just to give you an idea, I use 24lb inj with my supercharged setup. I run the stock pulley which nets about 8 lbs at WOT when its cold. I added an inline 155 fuel pump as well. If your truck is stock I would not worry about and use that 200 dollars on something else like maybe an after market camshaft or something. Thats my .02 cents
I'd scope out ebay or locally for some newer low milage 19lbs/hr injectors. You're talking well under $50 for them...I was given a set off a '99 GT. Just gotta be in the right place at the right time. They are everywhere and on pretty on all things Ford.
On a stock motor or bolt on motor, I doubt your IDC's are anywhere near max so there's no reason for larger injectors. Put that money toward something else. Since you are a '95, I'd bet you are MAF equpped and you have to get a recal'd MAF to get your injector offsets and fuel trims set too...unless you had Tweecer.
Hope that helps...
