Agreed. The autos usually suck.

Couple differences i noticed, when you have those locked in and pull the lever back in the truck, it locks in Immediately! The autos, you had to be at a complete stop, and take off to lock them in, hell every time i did that it CLUNKED and the truck jerked, that was BS. I got to play in mud last night, and i locked the hubs in just in case and i got in some thick stuff that in 2wd i got halfway up the hill, so i pulled it back to 4hi, stuck it in 2nd and bored my way out, BTW, Maxxis Buckshot mudders DIG! I was going up a steep hill with mud a foot deep, i was in 2wd and was pulling and she finally spun out, so i stuck it in 4hi and got on it good, they kept pulling i'm impressed!

Yeah my auto hubs sucked...
I think that's what led to my front u-joints going bad. Lock it in 4WD, go a few feet... *CLUNK* voila, trucks now in 4WD.

A couple months ago I changed out the front u-joints and installed some SuperWinch manual locking hubs and love 'em.

Why were the auto hubs on these 4x4 trucks so poor? I assume that means they were not "Shift-on-the-fly" either. Can you leave manual hubs in Locked if you keep the transfercase in 2Hi or will that cause more wear

Because of engaging problems, they don't half the time, and they engage poorly, causing problems. Yes you can leave them like that, but i suggest not doing it for very long, MAYBE 50 miles?

Just due to a poor design? It's hard to understand why they'd be so crappy to me. It's good to know that if I get a 4x4 Pre I will have manual hubs!
