Limited slip differential
The sticker on the inside of the driver's side shows a number 19 as the code for the rear end in my '91 F150 Custom 1/2 ton with 5 liter automatic.
I would like to install a limited slip diff. Anyone know the code I would use to check trucks in the auto wrecker?

dude, a couple things; if your gonna run a traction aid, i would not suggest a limited slip. if you wheel your truck offroad, a limited slip will fail on you when you need it, and on road, will have the potential to **** you off. also, getting one from the wreckers is iffy. gears could be different, and messs up you rearend, and most likey, the springs in it (limited slip) are probably all but useless, and will be like a open diff anyway. if the truck is for onroad use only, i guess the limited slip is a good choice, but i'd still buy new, in the long run, it'll save ya headaches. if you wheel your truck hard, i'd lock it up completely, that what i have done, and i love off road, its a night and day difference.

Thanks for the information everyone. That's an awesome picture Johnny_C. I can definately say I won't be 4x4'ing the way you are. I'm looking for better traction for winter driving and when I'm on the farm the extra traction through the drive ways and fields would be nice although winter driving is my main concern.
I'm just beginning to investigate what I can do for my truck and I would like to have something for next winter for sure. I like my truck too much to trade it off for a 4x4. My son and I named the truck 'Pocko" quite some time ago. He loves that he can sit beside me instead of in the back seat of the Expedition or my wife's car. Although the Exp has 4X4 and if necessary I use it, it's not the same as Pocko. Father - son bonding.
From what I've read it appears that there is an add on I can put into the rear end? Is this correct or am I misinterpreting?

You can do alot of things to improve the traction in the rear end. If you want your axle to be locked up solid I reccomend a Detroit locker. These are controversial though for winter driving.
There are alot of companies out there that make limited slip/lockers for your rig. It all comes down to what you want.

I also had an open diff, I did not care for it much if at all. So I decided to take the hit and get a detroit locker. This thing is great for off road traction, unfortuntally it sucks in the snow. Last christmas I was on the interstate and let off the gas, the truck did a 180 in the middle of the road, slid off into the center strip (grass) it rolled the tire off the rim and flipped the truck. When the tires have the option of being able to counter rotate on a slick surface such as snow, you will have less of a tendancy to lose traction in both tires.
thanks bro, i've been in worse situations, no pics as i'm just tryin to save my truck. anyway, if u just want winter traction, i guess the limited slip is the way to go. if you want to go offroad though, its a limited slip. the locker sucks on ice and slippery conditions, i admit, but if yourre a hardcore wheeler, locker is the way to go, and you'll get used to the ****tyness on the road...
