Timing question

On a 92 f150 300 l6 with fuel injection. I was trying to check the timing and could not find the mark on the scale with the timing light pickup on the the #1 wire, however when I put it on the #2 wire, the timing notch shows up just below the large sigle notch on the scale. When I pull the spout(i belive thats what it's called)up by the fire wall the timing adjusted as it should have. My question is does it make a difference which cyl it was timed to, or is #2 the correct cyl for this vehicle.
Thanks
Vince

It needs to be timed on the number one cylinder. Are you sure you are using the correct marks? The 4.9L is tricky. The marks you want can only be seen by standing on the passenger side of the truck, by the battery, and aiming your timing light at the crank. Do not try to use the marks on the drivers side.

Thanks PKRWUD I did exactly as you described and was looking for a conformation on what I belived to be the correct procedure. Since you mentioned "tricky" can you explain further if it is more than where to take the reding from as you described.? Also, the hash mark I found was about 1/4 of an inch wide, which I thought was pretty big. This is my first ford, so I'm a little nieve about whats normal. I was raised Chevy if that helps. I've also been getting a loud hum from the front gas tank, does this mean the pump is about to go? I also noticed the rear tank dumps fuel in to the front tank. Is this related to the front tank sound?

The visible notches on the damper are not the timing marks. The actual timing marks are very thin and very hard to see. There's one for TDC and one for 10° BTDC. Best thing to do is crawl under the truck and mark them with paint then time from above. Do not use the timing sector on the front cover, use the pointer at about 9 o'clocknext to the damper pulley

I have laid under there several times to find some other marks, they must be very thin! I have to put her on the lift to change out the fuel pump anyway. I'll look for the marks again then.
