Electrical problem with lights

I've got a 1990 F-150, with a lighting problem I can't seem to figure out.

When I pull on the headlite switch to the first click, nothing comes on. When I continue pulling to the second click, the headlites come on, but nothing else. I then have to tease the plunger rod on the lite switch back in a bit to get the rest of the lites (dash, tail lite, etc) to come on with the headlites. I have replaced the switch and plunger rod twice, and sprayed all contacts with electrical contact cleaner...and there is no change.

Any ideas?

maybe a short

Hi bruce..I had sort of the same problem you do. My parking lights and headlights would come on ok, but when driving, sometimes the parking lights went out. I changed the headlight swith, to no avail. Took the dash apart (just the facing of the instrument panel--not involved at all), and noticed a big burn mark on a plug block, behind the headlight switch. Don't know how your model comes apart, bit remove the trim and cluster cover (after removing plunger) and follow the wire from your switch...It should terminate at a block/large plug of wires (mine was white). I just fixed the short. Hope this helps.

Been there-Done that!

I know this sounds crazy but check ALL of your fuses. There is a certain one that when it blows it makes the lights do exactly what you are describing. I cant remember exactly what fuse it is,(or why it does this) but i bet you a 6 pack you find one blown. Let us know your results.
