Sputtering While on Front Tank

Hello. I have a 1996 Ford F-150, 5.0L V8, 177,000 miles with dual tanks. I just bought the truck one week ago. If I use the rear tank, everything seems to be fine. If you put the pedal to the metal, it will accellerate quickly with no sputtering. The fuel gauge seems to show an accurate reading as well. If I switch to the front tank, the engine will sputter during acceleration and slowly build speed. This may also be known as "cutting out". Also, the fuel level on the gauge seems to wander around. The check engine light is on all the time as well. Besides this, everything seems to be fine with the truck.

Thank you very much for much needed help,
jasonwho

Bad front fuel pump.

It's fairly simple to replace.

Thanks for the information.

To add to my original post, out of curiosity, yesterday, I switched to the front tank and the gauge showed more gas in it than I had put in it. I am assuming I am suffering from the same problem as others with the dual tanks. Does that sound like the same thing?

Earlier today, both tanks were pretty much on "E". I filled the rear gas tank until it the gas pump would quit pumping. It only held about 14 - 15 gallons. I then opened the front gas tank cap and it hissed loudly for 20 seconds. After it quit hissing, I opened it and started to put in gas. I got about 15 or 20 cents worth before it sprayed out onto the side of the truck. I didn't try to add anymore. About a mile after I left the gas station, the front tank showe 1/4 tank of gas.

Is there anything else besides the front gas pump that I need to replace or check? What all is involved in swapping one out? I have seen them for $130 at AutoZone. Any idea how much a Ford one is? Any other help on this would be much appreciated.

Thank you very much,
