Speedo calibration when changing ring and pinion gears?
Speedo calibration when changing ring and pinion gears?
I have a 1996 F150 I6 with a 5 speed manual transmission that I use to tow my stang around... it has 2.73 gears from the factory and I would like to install 3.55's to make it easier to get going....
I found in my haynes manual that there is no speedometer gear like in my '91 GT, and that the speedometer is generated from the ABS sensor... is this true? How can I fix the speedometer calibration to make it read correctly with the new gears? Will I have to buy a custom computer chip?
Thanks!
Andrew

The sensor reads the axle speed not the driveshaft speed. That means that you can change ring & pinion without recalibrating the speedo. If you change tire sizes, you will have to recalibrate it though. Go to www.ford-trucks.com and look for the tech article on recalibration.
