Unhappy Lost against the 4.2L

I just copied this from FordTruckWorld.com since I'm too lazy to write it again
Title says it all...I raced Simon(StreetCruizin) in his '01 4.2L Reg.Cab short bed manual with 30k miles, against my '96 4.9L Reg.Cab short bed, manual with 125k.
His performance mods were a lower harmonic balancer pulley, intake and exhaust...and well I don't feel like listing all of mine LOL. Real only thing against me was my tires.
I had really bad wheel spin going into 2nd gear, so I have a week to practise my starts off the line and some how figuring out how not to spin the wheels going into second if that's possible. I'm losing a lot of time because of my loss of traction.
None the less it was a very very very extremely close race, we went 2 times. Mine times off the line completely sucked though, that where he got me, all the rest of the way down the track we were dead even I was slightly gaining but 1/8th of a mile wasn't enough time.......so we are racing at LACR 1/4 this Saturday LOL.
Here's the stats of the 2 races:

1st race
streetcruzin Sprocket
R/T .813......R/T .895
60' 2.431.....60' 2.581
330 7.145....330 7.379
1/8 11.095...1/8 11.445
62.71 MPH....60.31 MPH

2nd race
R/T .620......R/T .786
60 2.559......60 2.738
330 7.292.....330 7.556
1/8 11.234...1/8 11.634
MPH 62.50....MPH 60.22

It was a very good race, Lynn recorded everything so hopefully it can be uploaded soon. Kinda funny because we were watching it earlier and you can hear and see my bad wheel spin going into second gear at the same time Simon is grinding into 2nd and 3rd. For the second race he had his shifting down good though.

I'm not gonna lie, I just traded in my Miata and my 96 F150 w/4.9l for an 03' Flareside with the 4.2 and it defiently feels faster in every way than the 96. You also get the added bonus of 20+ mpg on the highway with the new truck!!!!

Well victory is definately with in grasp.....the other driver even thinks I'll beat him this Saturday in the 1/4 mile and mostly everyone watching us on the 1/8 mile thinks the same also so we will see.

This time I'm going to be airing down my rear tires, topping off the rear gas tank and installing a throttle body spacer (I know I know paper weight) but I'm getting desperate LOL

Thanks for posting the results.

What were the weather and track conditons like? My guess is with cold dry weather and a little practice you would knock those et's down quite a bit.

If your 300 is anything like mine, it'll roll over and die before it gets thru the 1/4. 11.6 in the 1/8, 18.2 in the 1/4.

The 4.2 should always beat you in a race, it's designed for HP and will easily pull 1000 revs more than your 4.9.

Dump 1000 lbs. of dirt in the beds of both trucks and then see who wins the race. As I've said before it's Clydesdales and Thoroughbreds.

BTW since you've also got a 96, do you have any pix of your cold air induction setup? Please? Please? Please?

You need to practice. You should have him off the line because your torque comes in so much sooner. If you lost it off the line, then victory is well within reach.

Take care,
~Chris

The 96 is a whole different animal. MAF meter, single hose, tiny factory snorkle opening thru the grill, etc. No commercial kit to do the conversion and none of my attempts to date have done a thing.

That's right, I forgot it was MAF. Duh Chris!

Still, if you could find an FIPK with a single inlet, you could probably do the same thing. Mine had the usual air filter box behind the washer fluid/puke tank, with the snorkle up to the top of the radiator. I just got rid of it, and remounted the FIPK down by the opening on the side of the radiator. I also added ducting to the opening in the front of the bumper that directs air right to the K&N.

Just a thought.

Take care,
~Chris

Sorry no current pics of my intake on this site, but a lot of it was inspired by PKRWUDS, also going to be getting the cervinis ram-air hood with the kit and fabricating that up.

Racing starts at 1pm on Saturday and it's supposed to be 80'sF up there, it's going to be a small show/racing event so we will get a lot more runs in this time then last weekend.

The 4.2L driver thinks I'm going to get him on the 1/4 also....we shall see.

I'm not losing hope....I just really want to rub it in your face StrangeRanger LOL

Some pic's a friend took:

I plan on airing down the rear tires (31x10.5) to 25PSI and play around with the pressure finding whats best. The tires chirping in 2nd was hurting my time.

Sounds like with some more practice you'll be able to take him. Throttle body spacer At the very least I suppose it won't hurt anything.

Ya I was planning on making the TB spacer my self but wouldn't have access to a shop for another month so I just bit the bullet and ordered a Airade spacer, I just checked Fed-Ex and it's already sitting at my door step so when I get out of this hell hole (work) I'll pop it in, I'll let everyone know how big of a waste it was lol

Actually, I hope you do, but I wouldn't count on it. Most of the published Ets I've seen for near-stock 300s are low 18s for slushboxes and high 17s for manuals. I find it interesting that the guys with manuals all have traction issues. My E4OD won't even chirp the tires. You need to work on lowering your launch RPM and feathering the clutch just a tad. If you force the clutch to hook all at once, the tires have to break loose. With the E4OD I get 2.6 sec short times and it's not from tire spin, it's lack of power. The automatic comes in too slow to give a decent launch.
