Truck Itakes

Getting ready to rebuild my 120k 302 in my F150. I am wondering of the Explorer intake was a better intake than the stock intake for Torque?? Its any easy swap for the blower. I'll be doing a 306 rebuild with flat top pistons and GT40 heads and stock cam.. or maybe a 5.0 mustang cam...which ever is better for Torque. Gotta tow that Turbo charged Notchback around ya know

Well my freind, the Army says that I don't have to go to Korea anymore so I won't have the csh to by a F250. But guess what...I am moving to FT Polk LA. How far is that from you. If I do find a deal on a F250 then you'll be right there to come and get it

IIRC the Exploder manifold is basically the "Cobra" cast equivalent of the GT-40 intake. It provides a lot more high end flow than the stock manifold but has very long runners which promote low rev. torque. It's obviously a good choice with the GT-40 heads.

For a truck though, the Edelbrock might be a better choice, especially if you tow with it. It's reportedly a torque-monster.

As to cams, neither a stock nor a Mustang cam would be your best choice.

The Crane 2020 is a better truck cam and the 2030 is better yet if you want some more top end too. I've got a 2030 in my Mustang auto-xer with GT-40 intake and GT-40X heads. It PULLS.

Yeah I will probably just stay with the stock intake. Maybe just clean it up a little. I thought the 2030 cam was the equivlant of a E cam? Not looking for anything past towing really. Every now and then I outrun the typical honda with a folgers can for an exhuast pipe...just for laughs

The Crane 2040 is the same as (same manufacturer, same grind, diffferent label on the box) a "Ford" E cam. It's a high-rev cam, not designed for a heavy vehicle with tall tires. It's basically not what you need in a truck.

The 2030 has more lift, less duration, wider lobe centers. It is a monster mid-range cam for use with GT-40 heads. It allows a light vehicle to accelerate well from low revs, has a torque peak at about 3000 and still pulls well up to a 5200 HP peak

The 2020 is a bit milder than the 2030 gives a little more low range and a bit less mid-range. It starts to run out of breath at higher revs This is probably the towing cam of choice and would be a very strong street cam.

With GT-40 heads and a cam, you're going to want more air than a stock intake will provide.

Thanks for the info. With a fresh motor (306) with better heads, and camshaft (2020), I doubt a new intake will make much of a difference to me. If I feel that I want a little more then I will just swap the blower pulley to 10 lbs(3.33) vs the 6-7(4.0) I run now. If that don't do it I can always come home to the mustang and go blasting down the road via turbo charged 357

Much milder, more of a drop-in flat tappet cam for otherwise stock engines, wasted on GT-40 heads. The 2020, 2030,2031 and 2040 are hydraulic rollers.

2021
190/198 duration @ .050
252/260 adv. duration
.416/.432 lift
109 LCA

2020
208/216 duration @ .050
262/270 adv. duration
.530 lift
112 LCA

2030
216/220 duration @ .050
270/278 adv. duration
.533/.544 lift
112 LCA

2031 (1993 302 Cobra R camshaft requires 1.7 rockers)
214/220 duration @ .050
276/282 adv. duration
.513/.529 lift
112 LCA

2040 (Ford E camshaft)
220 duration @ .050
282 adv. duration
.498 lift
110 LCA

Big heads with big valve lifts and wide LCAs mean big torque. 2020 in trucks, 2030 in cars. The 2031 is more flexible than the 2040 but it's still a high end HP cam

I should call crane and ask which is better with the blower. I believe that 100-112 LCA is what you want for a blower cam??

With a blower you want minimal overlap and lots of lift.
2020.

How is the driveability with that camshaft. I don't want to have to need a custom ship for idle control and all that like I did my mustang. Hell thats about the size cam I got in my Mustang now...Fcam

Hey Forcefd, that cam is some good stuff. I installed it (powermax 2020 roller) in my 351 when I did the engine swap. Although I added 1.6ratio roller rockers, long tube headers, underdrive pullies, and 2.5" dual exhaust in addition to the cam, I can tell you from experience that this thing has TONS of torque. On the low revs, it doesn't quite pull like a stock 460, but by 3000rpm it will clearly outrun it all the way up to 5k. It seems to not even let up at 5000rpm, but I have not had it higher to find out were exactly the power peaks at. It will also respond differently to a 5.0, being a smaller engine, it will act like a little bit bigger cam than in a 5.8l.

Forgot to mention about driveability...

In my 351, there is just a slight cam lope. Sounds very good. I am running it off of the stock speed density system with no mods, tweeks, or upgrades. On mass air, it would be even smoother.

Not that trucks get GOOD mileage, but what did the cam do to your mileage?
Thanks
