Thumbs up Power Steering Gearbox

Man I am glad that is over, my gearbox has been pouring fluid for a week and I finally fixed it on my day off from work. Rebuilds started and $169 so I found a seal kit from ford for $18 bucks. Instead of replacing, I took it apart and replaced the seals, not a bad job, relatively easy to take apart and put back together. The only problem I ran into was that chiltons, haynes and the cd rom service manual all said to loosen the bolt that holds the steering shaft to the gearbox input shaft, if you loosen it will not come out, you have to completley remove it, the shaft has a radius in it that the bolt rests in and locks it, even when the bolt is lose. After I figured that out it went smooth and no more leak Had to buy a pitman arm remover and pickle fork. If you're gearbox is leaking fluid I would never consider buying a remanufactured one again, replacing the seals is very easy for $18

Powersteerinig Gear box

My 94 5.0 gearbox isn't leeking but the output shaft to the pitman arm is moveing side to side about 1/4". Is there a bushing in the houseing? Can I get a rebuild kit? I think I have the FX 50 gearbox. The tag on mine has SPA FA 94c 28c with E3AC 3580 A2A in the casting.

Actually I think all you need to do is reset the messload. On the top of your gearbox there is a hex nut with a set screw sticking out through it. Losen the nut and use a screwdriver to turn the screw, can't remember which direction, to tighten the messload, this may fix your problem. There is a bearing, no bushing. The instructions for setting the messload are in the chiltons manual if you have one.

I have allready tighten the meshload. is the bearing hard to get out ? Will I need to remove the gear box to get at the bearing? Where can I get a parts break down of this gearbox?

I did not remove my bearing as it was alright, but you will have to remove the gearbox, pull the cap off the top where the mess load adjustment is, pull the shaft through the top to get it out, then turn it over and remove a split ring, then what looks like a rubber coated washer, the the oil seal, then the bearing will come out. Everything is actually pretty easy to do.
I got a parts breakdown from the ford parts department, they just printed it off the computer, showed how to take it apart and everything. Man those guys are helpful, they are the ones that put me on the seal kit $18 versus buying a rebuilt one $180-210.
