Removing the A/C

Would I see any if at all a performance increase if I removed the whole A/C assembly?

It's July 25th, and you live in Valencia. The low today will probably be in the 70's, and the high will be over 100. And you want to remove your a/c???

Justin, you need to start wearing a hat. The sun is damaging your brain.

You would notice several improvements, including a much cooler running engine temp, and more responsiveness, but I don't think it's worth it at all.

Take care,
~Chris

In my case it may be worth it, I've had the truck for over 3 years now and have only turned the A/C on 3 times (not being sarcastic) and 2 times were only because I had my baby bro with me but now he's bigger.

I'm not a performance junkie knowing the fact that I have a 4.9L but it's almost a waste to have something on the truck I never use yet it could benifit me more by removing it....I'll give it some more thought before I tear it out.

The weight savings is propably doing as much as the drag loss. In your case cleaning up the engine compartment will make it easier to detail out...... not that most of us bother with that.

I'm with Chris, it's nice to have when you want it. You might not care, but if you have a date on a really hot day she's not going to care if the truck is quicker if she's hot. (As in warm.... if she's hot the lack of A/C shouldn't matter LOL)

If you do decide to yank it and want to sell any of it, let me know. I need to replace my compressor. If they're the same on the 6 and the 5.0 I'd probably be interested.

Nah been with the same girl for a while lol and will be, her car is the cruiser.

But if I do decide to yank it out I'm going to keep it around and pop it back in when it come's time to salel so I can keep the resale value up.

You know, I've been thinking about doing that for a while now. When it comes to using my a/c, I am very stubborn. We just had a long stretch of 100+ degree weather here and I didn't use my a/c once, even during my 45 minute commutes home. I just never thought it would be worth the trouble of taking it out, but a cooler running and more reponsive engine sounds great to me. I think I've used my a/c maybe twice in the 4 years I've had my truck. I just don't think I use it enough to justify leaving it in there. If I take it out, I'm assuming I'll need a shorter belt, right?

LOL see I'm not the only crazy Californian!
A few weeks ago I drove to Vegas in 115 degree heat and still didn't turn on the A/C!

I also heard though it would be illegal for me to remove the line's or let the refrigerant (sp?) leak out, so could I just remove the condensor and compressor but leave the lines in place?

I never use mine either an New Orleans is damn hot also. I just roll down the windows open the 1/4 glass, open the rear slider and the sunroof and I have plenty enough airflow!

i live in jersey, w/ the average summer temp of like 90..so i have been considering it too. I can remember only 1 time using it and it was because my friend was bitchin that he wanted it on, other wise, windows wide open is good enough for me and it has been for over 2 years. So if anyone does it, make a post so we can all enjoy the better throttle response.

PS. with my truck being stick, i feel that i loose a lot more performance w/ that stupid ac on..i hated doing it just that once!!!

Most new cars automatically disengage the compressor clutch at wide open throttle for more power. Our older trucks probably don't have this feature though?? Summit sells wide open throttle switches for nitrous systems, there only a few dollars. I wonder if you could wire one of those in to interrupt power to the a/c switch at WOT?? Wouldn't help much for throttle response but might give you an extra 10hp when you have it floored.

The better throttle response will be more noticeable in trucks with a 4.9, but as mentioned, the weight savings will be noticed by everyone. The lines should be disconnected and drained at your corner garage, and then remove it all. You are wasting your time if you just pull the compressor. You will need either a shorter belt, or an idler pulley you can mount in the a/c compressors place. I'd have to go look under my hood to better determine that, and right now I'm comfy.

BTW, I live at the beach, where the temp rarely get's above 80, and I LOVE my a/c.

I was young once, however, and removed the a/c from every vehicle I owned. I like to think I'm older and wiser now. LOL.

Take care,
~Chris

Decided not to remove my a/c. I just learned that with autos, the defroster, heater, and a/c are tied in so I won't be able to remove the entire a/c assembly without affecting my defroster and heater. I can stand to sweat a little in the summer, but I HAVE to have a good defroster in the winter. The defroster will still work, but it uses the compressor to cool the air which makes it much more effective. Wonder who's going to be the guinee pig now?
