Red face 1988 bronco running problems??

I just got it for $800

Seemed to be running fine when i got it, this morning when i went to go somewhere the truck took forever to start up. then once i backed out of my parking spot the truck died... (once i hit breaks)

then it took forever to start it up again... so i started it with my foot on the gas alittle bit and it started up fine. When i let my foot off the gas to put it into gear it turned off again...

So i started it with foot on gas alittle bit, then put it in gear and it ran fine down the drive way. When i got to the end of the drive way i had to stop to see if anyone was coming and once again... the truck turned off....

What does this sound like to anyone??

Only problems i know of is a cracked exaust manifold that is making it blow out black smoke. :o

A cracked manifold will not make it blow black smoke.
Black smoke means it is running too rich(too much fuel). Pull the codes and see what it tells you.

yeah, I would say the injectors need to be flushed, sounds like they are leaking. You didn't say what engine, the I6 had a real problem with the injectors.

Yeah, the black smoke is from being too rich. Way too rich. If it only starts when you put the pedal to the floor, that's because you are telling the ECM to enter "flood mode", which means it shuts off the injectors until it starts. However, even with leaky injectors, it shouldn't continue to have problems that bad right away on the re-starts. Also, injectors don't go from fine to that bad over night. How long has it been blowing black smoke? have you pulled any codes? What do the plugs look like?

lets not get too carried away at once here.......the black smoke could be actually burning oil...normally blue smoke but its kinda hard to tell sometimes....his prob kinda sounds more like a screwed up idle air control valve. If i were u i would remove it and clean it first thing...that may take care of it for a while.. but a new one will be in order if that is what the prob is. i could be wrong but thats what it sounds like to my ear. hope that helps

Yeah i'd definately say it's running rich. the past couple of days i've managed to run out of gas and get stuck on the side of the road. Luckily I had my gascan ready and a buddy following me.

I put in $10 worth of gas at $1.32/galon = 7.45 galons

drove approximately 37.5 miles until the truck ran out of gas!!

So i guess that is about 5 Miles/Galon!!!

Oh and another thing i dont know if i mentioned it but the guy i got the truck from didnt give me the intake cover or the hoses that connect to the throttle body/mas so that's probably hurting the fuel economy also. Not to mention i have a cracked exaust mani and the whole engine is full of carbon, so the engine's sucking in all that lovely carbon...

I'm pretty much broke so i'm fixing my gs eclipse since it's really good on gas so i dont have to spend $10 in gas just to get to work every day. Then i hope i can save enough money to look at this stuff you guys are telling me

thanks guys
keep the ideas/thoughts coming!

Your joking, right? You must be. The hose that connects your tb to your maf is missing? Okay, so how do you figure the ECM knows how much air the engine is taking in?

Dude, I can't tell if this is a joke, or you really don't know, but not only is that tube mandatory, it has to be air-tight.

Good luck.

OMFG!!!!

Ok if you do drugs or drink, you need to stop.

And if you don't do them, then you need to start!

If this isn't a joke and you are serious that engine is toast.

One obvious thing that comes to my mind is that an 88 bronco didnt have a mass air flow sensor. It is still speed density.
Pull the codes and see what they tell you.
Good luck
