Serious Cruise Control Problem

Yesterday I was cruising about 57, 58, with my cruise on, and my stop was coming up so I hit the "off" button on my cruise control, and put the stick in neutral. Well, after about 5-10 seconds after having done that, the engine just started racing. I hit the brake real quick because I know that that disengaged the cruise for sure, and even that took a second or two to work. This is the second time this has happened to me, and I know for sure that I did hit the off button. It always happened about 5-10 seconds after I hit the off button. This can be a serious problem, my motor wound up to 5500 and the check engine light came on. Anybody have this happen to them?

Sounds funky alright. For some reason the off switch isn't doing its job obviously, but the brake switch should be overriding everything. Maybe the rod is hanging up

What the crazy thing is, is happens after a period of time AFTER I've hit the button "off" I'll be coasting in neatral at 800 -1000 RPM's for 5-10 seconds, then all of a sudden, it's like someone reached accross the floor from the passenger side with their foot and stomped on the accelerater! It's driving me crazy, that tach flies up so fast, and the chech engine light came on a couple times, I've gotta be doing some motor damage.

Pull the fuse before you run something over. Sounds like a short to power or something goofy like that. I've never heard of anything like this happening before but I'd definely look for chaffed wires and check the rod that pulls the throttle- see if it binds or doesn't return.
