What is this.....whats it do?

Well, I discovered that what I thought to be an exhaust leak on the manifold, in fact isn't. Here's the deal:

There is a metal tube that runs the legth of the motor above the injectors. It has threaded inserts into the motor at each cylinder. Anyway, its this tube that is leaking. What the heck is it? Part of the smog pump system?

Thanks!

What's leaking? Liquid or exhaust...I can't think of what you're talking about, possibly the fuel rail or that tube that goes to the EGR valve

Its exhaust leaking out of the tube, but it doesn't look like to routes into the EGR. Maybe it does and I'm not seeing where it does. Its very easy to see under the hood, the tube is on the passenger side, close to the rocer arm cover.

That is your air tube; it is for the emissions system. Air comes from the air pump to a series of vacuum actuated valves with backflow preventers. When the valve connected to the pipe you are describing opens, fresh air from the pump enters the heads and goes into the exhaust ports. The flange where the pipe meets the head surface has no gasket and only one bolt holds it in place, if that bolt has walked out, it could cause an exhaust leak at that juncture when air is not being pumped. Check that bolt and make sure it is tight; otherwise the tube could have rusted through since they are prone to corrosion. If it is rusted through and perforated, you will have to replace it.

Thanks FastPony! I'm not sure if its just that bolt backed out or if its rusted through. The tube retails for $135.....sure is nice having a brother-in-law thats the parts guy at the Ford dealership though.

OUCH!!! $135 bucks eh, I'm glad I'm able to use my old one on my new motor. You might see if your B-I-L could scare up a good used one first before throwin' down good jack for a new one.

It is nice having Ford connections, isn't it..........
