Rocker arms and cam, no clue what to pick??

I'm looking right now in the summit racing book in the 5.0L/4.6L mustang section. I have been trying to figure out what the major differece is between rocker arms for pedestal mount heads and stud mount heads. I dont know what I need to check to see what kind of heads I have. I got gt-40's off ebay and I dont know which one they are. Is there a difference between them and stock?

Also if you have the catalog, right below it is the ford racing cams. Just wondering which one would fit best in a truck that has the mods I do and would still be street legal? I am still really new at the head and cam specs and am still trying to figure it all out. Thanks

I'm not sure any of those Ford racing cams would be good for a truck, i think there designed more for mustang applications. If you send an email to any of the major cam manufacturers (crane, comp, lunati, etc) and tell them what vehicle you have, what mods, and how your going to use the vehicle they can recommned a cam for you. You could probably get a generic cam from them that will fit you needs for arounf $100. I needed something different so i am having comp cams grind a custom cam for me for $190.

I called crane when I built my 302, told them what I wanted to get outta my truck and what all I intended to do, they gave me the right cam for my truck as well as all the matching lifters, springs etc. I am well pleased with the results

Ford4ever and Ccnseven are right on the money, the best way to go is to contact the cam companies, they have years of experience and have done thousands of applications some of which are probably just like or similar to yours. Mustang cams have too much duration in them and will give up low end grunt you need in a truck. Ideal truck cams have shorter duration but can still have higher lift to the point your pistons can support clearance wise (typically no more than .500" for stock pistons).

As far as rockers go, the GT-40 heads you have selected should use the pedestal type rocker unless the previous owner converted them to screw in studs. Any good set of roller rockers will serve you well for a more accurate valve train and a slight decrease in oil temp. You can stay with the 1.6 ratio or you could use 1.7 to increase the lift of your cam, for instance a cam with .472" lift with 1.7 ratio rockers would yield .502" lift. Generally staying with the 1.6 is the better way to go, but you can get the Crane/Motorsport 1.7's pretty cheap compared to others.

Most important, make sure the springs you have are designed for the application, installed height and seat pressure are very important. The better cam companies can provide you with all the necessary hardware to complete your installation. Give them a call, they are there to help. (Comp Cams, Crane, Crower)

Also don't forget to mention to them if your truck is speed density or mass air. Speed density systems are sensitive to cam duration changes.
