351

Ok, as some of you know I just bought a 73 mach 1. It has this really crummy fmx tranny in it, only 3 speeds....no good. So I was thinking of doing a C6 swap. Now for the question. The car has a 351 2V engine. Are all the 351 engine (C,M,W) bell housings the same?? I am being told that they are not, but would like to confirm it. Thanks

(A C-6 tranny also only has 3 speeds)

A 351c and a 351w have the same belhousing pattern.
351m has a different pattern.

I had an fmx in an old torino, damn thing weighed twice as much as a c6 and is about a foot longer. It was also one of the strongest trannys built, especially with shift kit, couldn't tear it up if I tried, and I tried hard, actually broke the 9" rear end twice with no damage to the trans.

FMX trannies are tough as nails, but they do weigh a lot. They have a cast iron case where most other trannies have an aluminum case. They are rather tough to find parts for though.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

I had a 72' galaxie with an FMX trans . it went out and i got another at the junk yard . dam thing was the hardest trans to change out i ever dealt with cause of how heavy it is . new one was great never had a problem with it . at first i thought it was a C6 (before i knew ford had more then a C4 and a C6 ) the C6 wouldnt bolt up to the block and it was a 351 C .
