Reliability/accuracy of oil pressure gauge in '90 F150

We're talking about the stock dash gauge - 150k mi 5.0. Sometimes when I start the truck, the oil pressure goes straight to the middle of the gauge and stays. Sometimes, it goes to the "N" in normal and sits. It doesn't move with engine rpms either. Shouldn't it? I know the stock gauge in my Mustang would at least rise and fall with rpm fluctuation(I've since gone with Autometer in the Stang).

Do I have a faulty/failing sending unit, or is that just the way these gauges are? BTW, I'm not interested in buying an aftermarket gauge/set of gauges for the truck.

The gauge takes an average over time, thats why it doesnt reatc quickly to rpm change, sharp corner that cause you're pickup tube to suck air, etc. I also run an autometer sport comp. My truck idles at 30 and drives at 55psi, but my dash gauge never fluctuates.

Yeah he's right, unfortunatly most of the gauges in Ford trucks don't show true readings. If your oil pressure gauge ever drops to zero on these trucks then it's already too late!

LOL! Good grief! I just thought it was a little inaccurate - turns out it's irrelevant (pretty much). Thanks fellas - I won't worry about the small fluctuations.

Gauges are all relevant anyway, Even the expensive aftermarket ones. Aftermarket one are more accurate and I always install new gauges on every vehicle I own
