ram air intake = wow!
ram air intake = wow!
well i got bored a couple of days ago and started poling around under the hood. first off i want to say that the engineer that designed the f-150 air box was on crack. i figured i could improve it so i cut off the little 90 degree elbow at the front of the air intake. then i cut two windows in the grill to let air in. wow! can't really tell around town, but get on the higway and there's a definate power increase!! now i want to enlarge the windows in the grill, and add something around the edges to make them look factory. ram air rules!!!
so did mine. now the air goes in the grill cutouts straight into the snorkel, thru the k&n filter. works great and didn't cost anything. (already put the k&n in last summer). and i put the cutouts between the grill bars so they're kinda hidden.
I think mines different from both you guys, my snorkle in on top of the grill, its the first thing you see when you pop the hood. Pics of what you did would be great. I'm gonna do somethin with my intake set-up in about 2 weeks, thinkin about buildin my own fipk, you can buy the fipk filter for $46 and I work in in a stn stl fab shop, I'm thinkin I can build the adaptor plate here at work. Any of you guys tried this? Sure would beat payin way over $200 for the entire kit
mine came thru the radiator mount, but the grill completely covered it. the only way air got in was between the grill and the headlight. now you can look thru the grill straight into the air intake. i'll try to get pics soon.

i did exactly what Macgyver did and then i cut holes in the grill as well. on my 94 150 grill the only opening is in front of the rad. the airbox snorkel is has(had) no direct su=ource of outside air. so i cut holes between the grill bars so air goes straight in now.
I looked in mcgyvers gallery and my truck is completly different, the snorkle on my truck is on top of the radiator and the hood closes on top of it. You can actually look under in between the hood and top of grille with the hood shut and you're lookin right into my snorkle, gets direct cool air all the time. Is anybody else's like this?

This is the normal setup. Though it doesn't look very efficient we did some testing with a leaf blower and it actually picks up a good bit of air.
I had originally planned on modifying the tube to go through the hole next to the radiator, but decided against it. On my truck it's hidden behind the grill until you chop the grill up anyway, require a fairly sharp turn if you didn't chop the grill.
Rather than cut off the bottom on my airbox, I did some drilling. With some tesing I found that the right amount of holes will still pull air through the tube even at idle, keeping the charge air cooler. Above a certain throttle position it starts pulling more through the holes.
What I was shooting for was a flow increase without opening it up so much that it hurt low end. Seems to have helped, and being the cost was only that of a drop in filter I can't complain. A friend has a more or less identical truck.... he got a FIPK, I did home grown. SOTP and screwing around we both got about the same improvements.
