Ignition timing and spout
Ignition timing and spout
Okay, in case anyone has been following any of posts concerning my engine swap follies, I am almost done. My work schedule has been very light lately giving me plenty of time to work on my truck, but has also given me less cash to spend on it. So far the engine is in and now runs very well. I'm waiting till I get paid again to buy my exhaust system. Once that is done, I need to take care of some details including setting the timing with a light. That being said, what should I set it at, and what is the spout I've read some of you writing about? I'm relatively new to Fords. My youth was spent in the world of Mopar.
Here's what I'm running:
'92 F-150 4x2 regular cab, short bed, A/T 396k miles
5.0L H.O. from a '93 Lincoln Mark VII 5k miles
Stock Lincoln Shorty headers With Mustang Off road H-pipe. Plans include Flowmasters w/o cats.
P.S. GO BUCS!!!!

When you set the timing on most computer controlled vehicles you need to either jump some terminals in a connector, or in the case of most Fords, disconnect a spout connector. This makes the computer set the rpm where it needs to be and disable the timing advance temporariyl so you can accurately set the base timing. Sorry i don't know exactly where this connector is on your engine but i'm sure someone here does.

Look for the ignition control module (ICM) it is on the left inner fender just in front of the firewall. It's easy to spot, it's got a big finned heat sink around it. follow the line out of it. There will be a socket with a grey or possibly black jumper plug taped up to that line. The plug is the spark output (SPOUT) connector. Pull it to set the timing then replace it. It is keyed so it can only be put in one way. On a 302 HO, stock timing is 10 BTDC, you can usually push this to 14 or more without pinging.
