Y or Z?

The knuckle heads for getting my starter need to know if my engine is a Y or Z...I have no idea what they are talking about.

Hmm, that's interesting, when I got a new starter, they didn't ask me if my engine was a Y or a Z or any other letter for that matter. They just asked me what year, engine displacement, drive, and tranny type. Although, that sounds like something you may be able to find in your vin. Just a thought. I think the most important aspect is what kind of tranmission you have, since your starter bolts right on to your transmission. I don't think it really matters what kind of engine you have. Maybe they just need that info to determine what kind of tranny you have, but if you know, you can just tell them. Well good luck!

I think it's only on the 300ci and it's kind of a big price difference.

One is like $140 and the other is $170 and the guy said, I guess I'll just bring in my old one when I buy the new.

According to the Chilton's the 300 only came in one version that is Y. Actually they don't even list a Z for any engine in the F-150's from 1987-1996.

I was told it should be one of the digits in my VIN and I only have a Y not a Z. So Y it is.

It's a Y.

Look at your VIN. I think it's the 8th digit.

Take care,

Sure, sneak in front of me when I'm posting. *******.

As far as the Z engine, it exists. I think it's the natural gas 4.9L.

Take care,
~Chris
