That 5.0L sound

Since I have my new true dual exhaust setup, my truck sounds awesome, however it still doesnt have that sound that the 5.0 stangs do. Is it the cam that they have that gives them that unique sound? I am trying everything I can to get it, but I just seem to come up short. My truck sounds more like a Big Block than a 5.0, thats not a bad thing, but you know when a 5L stang is coming around the corner, I want my truck to sound like that, what will I have to do?

It's hard to say what your missing without hearing your truck, but I'd say the cams would be what makes the noise. Maybe it's your timing?

I don't know if they make aftermarket cams for these trucks...so someone else take it from here. lol

It's largely attributed to the firing order. If you had an HO cam, or a Windsor cam, you would have the firing order that creates the sound you desire.

Take care,

I had heard that I have the firing order of the stangs. Does anyone know what it is, I will go and compare it to mine.

Yours should be 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
The HO uses the 351 firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

If it's just the sound you are looking for, then I would get rid of the magna mufflers and go with flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. This will change the sound of your truck. I think it will give you the sound you are looking for.

My firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 says so on the sticker under the hood. So what does this mean, do I have an HO cam?

And I had a flowmaster and that is no where near the sound I am talking about, that is just a loud drone. I want that unique THUMP that the stangs have to them. Maybe once I add some headers I will get that sound.

No it means you have the same firing order as every 351 ever built, there's nothing inherently high output about the firing order. Do you have MAF? I'm pretty sure all mass-air systems use the 351 order since they were originally developed for the 5.0 HO and since with SEFI the injector order must match the spark plug order. An HO cam would not be likely to have enough bottom and midrange torque to do a truck much good. Remember you weigh at least a thousand lbs more than a Fox Mustang

I run Flowmasters (3 chamber) it kinda sounded like a mustange at first, but when i cut my tailpipes off and ran turndowns right after the muffler,Thats what made the big difference....nice and throaty and the lump from the new cam really stands out now.

I agree with the turndowns. I have a single flowmaster muffler with dual turndowns right after the muffler. I wouldn't say my truck sounds exactly like a Mustang, but I have gotten tons of comments about my truck sounding more like a muscle car than anything else. And the exhaust/engine harmonies are music made in muscle car heaven when I get on it.

Any ways, to be honest with you, I don't think there's any way you're going to get your truck to sound exactly like a Mustang. Mustangs will be Mustangs and F-150's will be F-150's. But to get it close, I recommend free flowing exhaust and induction systems and turndowns.

Well I guess I will live with the sound of my truck until I get a cam or something. I am not saying my truck doesnt sound mean or anything. It is very aggressive, and I love it, It just doesnt have that certain tune to it that the stangs have. And for having a free flowing exhaust, I dont see how I could have a better one other than adding headers. Magnaflow mufflers in general are quiet, and this setup is quieter than when I had 1 flowmaster, but I wouldnt trade it for anything, the flow was just annoying and drony, the magnaflows are deep, and aggressive, and when you want them to be, it can be almost as quiet as stock, along with giving ZERO drone while cruising. Plus this setup will never be as loud, because now I have two mufflers rather than 1, so I am muffling the sound twice as much. I think once I get some headers, I will get closer to the tone I am looking for.

Thanks for all the help guys

My truck has a 7.5 liter sound. One and a half times louder than the 5.0 sound.

I do believe that the longer your exhaust is the duller it will sound and the shorter the sharper, so if you could replicate the Mustang exhaust as close as possible with your truck, you would come out close. Alot of those 5.0 'Stangs had shortie headers, too
