Doesn't matter what your political leanings are, this is sad.

Here is an even scarier one. Seems the education system is failing or at the least going backwards.

I read an interesting article.
College grads are waiting longer to take a job, as they want a good job day 1 and are holding out for it.
New employees look for more praise or noted feedback for doing their daily work and expect promotions quicker.
The same new employees want a coach more than a boss, giving them continual feedback.
Sounds like the "not keeping score and everyone gets an award for participating" is starting to reap the same in the work place.
This is not new, ~10 years ago some companies were holding job fairs that were targeted at the parents as much as the applicants. Seem to recall Enterprise rent a car was the noted in the article ( USAToday article ).
- This same article had other hiring manager comments on applicants failing drug tests, and the parents would call and harass them about their kid should be allowed to take the drug test again, 'they took supplements'. Really, since when is Marijuana a supplement, aside from CA ?
>That is not so much the education system, but more so the students themselves.
No! It's both! Just look at the declining standards for teachers and the fact that most of them are DEMANDING and GETTING union protection for their jobs. You can go just about anywhere and find numerous stories and actual examples of the poor grammar and spelling, etc that many teachers use.

Well that USED to be true for college grads. Unfortunately, now there's a lot more grads AND a lot fewer jobs. But the colleges, their recruiters and advertising are still convincing people to spent time and money to go to college with the argument that they WILL graduate into a good job. It's just not true.

I think that's to be expected since they just got out of 16+ years of school where that was the norm. I think the real cause is that most young people today CAN'T get jobs as teenagers and they go straight from HS to college and then to work so they expect to be lead. I started working when I was in third grade (newspaper route), when I was in Jr High I started working in a store. When I was in high school I worked as a butcher in a meat market, during the summers of my sophomore and junior years I worked installing electronic equipment and in a paint and body shot during the school year. It's a real shame but NONE of those jobs are open to teenagers any more! Newspaper routes used to all be operated by teenagers but today even those simple jobs are BOUGHT and SOLD and preformed by adults. It's no wonder that today's kids have no work ethic, when do they ever get the chance!!

Unfortunately all to true!! But employers are having the same problem with so called "adults"! You can thank the welfare state for that one! Today no one has to stay clean so that they can get and keep a job in order to survive. Today anyone can go down and get food stamps, government housing, free medical care at the public hospitals, etc etc.

I'm sick of working my *** of and paying for morons multiple times my age to sit on their *** and collect. Its stealing IMO. I heard some buffoon at work talking about how she doesn't get enough aid. I look over and she has a dunkin donuts coffee. No luxuries should be allowed on any aid. If you can you purchase that your not worse enough for it to require aid.
I don't see how you can say that. The article talks about how these students have an overinflated opinion of themselves, but also cannot read or write as well as those from the 60's and 70's. That tells me that the education system is not doing as well. I think students now are held to a much lower standard. "pass them through" no matter what. It looks bad if the students fail, so pass them through with lowered standards.
While students are much more likely to call themselves gifted in writing abilities, objective test scores actually show that their writing abilities are far less than those of their 1960s counterparts.
Also on the decline is the amount of time spent studying, with little more than a third of students saying they study for six or more hours a week compared to almost half of all students claiming the same in the late 1980s

There are jobs out there, and the article pointed out the grads did not want them, they felt they were better than the jobs that were available ( and it was not talking about working at McDs with a MBA ).
Teachers were not coaches, they gave assignments and it was expected you did them on time. If you did not, you failed.
The answer given, this is how it is in the real world, if you don't complete a task on time, your boss is going to fail you. If this really is a fact, then teaching as a whole ( not the individuals ) has changed by state and federal rules.

The interviews that the article was based on, was getting at new grads are in for a rude awakening. The promotions & raises are not going to be every 3 months. If the new hires are expecting this, they are going to be disappointed and have problems at work. Guess adults have the same issue, they are going to be cycling jobs quite often, which could hurt them getting hired after a certain point.
The topics of food stamps, health care, etc, etc have nothing to do with the job expectations of new hires.
Where I got that opinion from :
The next line is what pointed me to the student as the source of this problem :
This does not imply they are doing worse and getting the same grades as those from the 60s, it only show the current students are scoring lower in writing abilities.

The same also applies to writing as I didn't even own a typewriter. Everything was done in longhand. Now with word processors and spell checkers, it makes it infinitely easier. Or now you can even use something like Dragon, where you do not even have to type.

We need to get God back in our school systems.
The country has gone down hill ever since we stopped making time to praise Our Lord And Savior Jesus Christ. It's truly sad.
Liberals are filling our children's heads with lies, we need the word of Christ back in our school systems now, before its too late!
