In general gold is a better choice for a general investment, as the uses are greater than silver.
This why gold is at 18xx.00 / oz and silver is at 43.xx / oz. The movement was from gold at 15xx.00 / oz and silver was 34.xx / oz at the same time.

If you are looking for something to buy and toss in the safe and forget about, nothing wrong with silver in that case.
I am guessing you are looking at Silver due to the cost of it vs gold.

if you want more price movement gold is the way to go, if you are after a monetary item 'just in case' Silver works, as does items like ammo for the Armageddon scenario.

If you are looking at a silver / gold funds, keep in mind this can have swings that are contra to the price of gold ( normal stock price things like PE, company mgmt, etc ). There are gold ETFs that track from the price of gold, but these are based on a smaller unit for pricing ( usually 1/10th of oz ) and you will have the fund mgmt fees taken out of it, and it could be a load or no load ETF
Both of these are only for the price movement, and you will need to get out of them some day, where physically owning the metal buying the bars.

Gold is hard to find in bars less than 1 oz, and you still have the price issue ( 1/10th oz of gold is ~190.00 vs 1 oz silver bar at ~ 48.00 ).

Take a look at coin shops around you. Best to go on a SAT AM, check spot price before you leave ( from FRI close ), to get an idea if they are jacking up the price due to demand. If they are don't go back there. Some want 10.00 added to the spot price for silver bars.
The other option is 90% silver coins ( liberty dollars, etc ). These are not slabbed coins. Thing is they are going to move ~ 90% of the price of silver.

Owning the metal in your hand is a toss in the safe investment, not something you are going to actively trade in and out of.

Coin shops are the best place for this, stay away from pawn shops and the cash for gold places, that will be a skewed pricing on the item, generally speaking.

We might as well invest in water.

The actual apocalyspe being just around the corner is just a viable a scenario as anything else and those who did not put their money in potable water will surely be loosers. You can't drink gold; it burns too much as it's going down.

Future possible news flash CNN: Potable Water shares were up today ending a VERY volital day on Wall Street.

If not for yourslef then do it for the children.

What people like silver07 fail to see is that gold has intrinsic value and has been money for thousands of years. If you compare the dollar chart to gold or silver, you will see that when the dollar drops, gold and silver increase in value.

As long as the government continues to print/borrow fiat (paper) currency, gold and silver will continue their rise. Naturally, when prices increase or portions decrease at the grocery store, we tend to blame the companies. But price inflation is a direct result of our government borrowing/printing money. A.K.A: The hidden tax of inflation.

Silver will be in an upward trend with gold, although it is more volatile (more likely to increase/decrease day-to-day) than gold.

Like sscully said, try some coin shops in your area and look for American eagle coins. You can buy them individually or in a sleeve of 20. They contain 1 oz. of silver or gold. Just make sure to shop around for the best price and be sure to know the exact price of an ounce of gold/silver that day.

Unfortunately (and I only tell you) I am in a trance. I cannot look away from the car wreck that is our country. Lately, I am not an optimist and that is why I think that nothing anyone does to protect themselves matters. I tend to think that those who invest in gold to protect themselves are just blind to the impending doom we all face or the doom that we wallow in currently.

I hate this "halfway to hell" life that most of us seem to live and that I definately live. Not quite in a type of hell but don't turn your back on anyone and don't infringe on the rights of the criminally powerful and don't ask for a moment of peace and quiet. If you don't think that you yourself live in a kind of hell, then you are most likely one of the one's that creates the kind of hell for everyone else and you are blind to that fact. You are probably a TEA party member and you could be in love with Michelle Bachmann or her husband.

BTW, in real life, I am an optomist through and through. It's a lie but it draws me a steady paycheck.

On a brighter note, I've lost a few pounds on my new diet and I have to admit I am looking and feeling good. And I'm not just saying that.

Only you could take a thread about investing in silver and turn it into a debate about the Tea Party. It really is pathetic. There's more to life than politics and really if you are that against the Tea Party maybe you should find another country. The Tea Party has pretty much taken a strict interpretation of the Constitution and that is what this country was founded on, not the interpretations of the SCOTUS.

Now this is terrific!

I put on a pair of jeans I had in the closet. I looked at the 32 inch waist and I knew they were going get stuck at my knees. To my surprise they slid right on and buttoned right up.

So I'm down from 36 to 32s and I'm flying up the stairs.

Oh wait! AM I Allowed to talk about my weight in a Silver thread? Ha ha ha ha!
