The California Way and the Texas Way

A story about a coyote.

California: The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out to attack the Governor's dog, then bites the Governor. The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie "Bambi" and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural. He calls animal control - Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it.He calls a veterinarian - the vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases. The Governor goes to a hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged. The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is now free of dangerous animals. The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for residents of the area. The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world. The Governor's security agent is fired for not stopping the attack. The State spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with additional special training re: the nature of coyotes.PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million suit against the State.

Texas: The Governor of Texas is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A Coyote jumps out to attack his dog.1. The Governor shoots the coyote with his State-issued pistol and keeps jogging. The Governor has spent $0.50 on a .45 hollow point cartridge.2. The Buzzards eat the dead coyote. And that, my friends, is why California is bankrupt and Texas is not.

I would say that is a fair representation of the situation in Cali. lol

Is it any wonder they have lost much of their tax base since the early '90s?

Everyone knows a .45 hollowpoint costs more like $0.75 instead of $0.50

Can we get the coyote to bite the governor some more? I would help to train him!

Plus the only problem I see with this story is I can't picture Moonbeam jogging.

After 20 years working for California government, the story seems about right, but the dollar figures need to be multiplied by about 10 ... California is a beautiful place, but man is it screwed up!

Jim, didn't Parry shoot it twice? And the last time I picked up .45ACP hollow points it was $1.25 a round but that's still a bargain compared to Kalifornia's solution.

Hey! I was not saying that all numbers are correct, just that he was actually jogging and killed a coyote that attacked.

I know, just giving you grief.

I've been fighting the State of California recently. My wife and I bought a used vehicle from my father in law. When we registered it, we signed DMV forms indicating the transfer was between family members and exempt from sales tax. Fine and dandy.

Everything was great for about 18 months. Then I get a notice (four notices actually, three at home and one sent to my office) from the State demanding $750+- in transfer tax!

So I call the State and find out about the appeals process, and file a 'Petition for Redetermination'. See, we really are exempt from the tax, as my wife really is her father's daughter. I find out we get one shot at this - if the state determines our proof is insuffiicent (and the burden is 100% on us), we owe the tax + penalties.

So I send copies of her birth certificate, her baptism, our wedding invitation and our certificate of marriage.

Then I get a letter from the state saying they received my appeal, but they recommend I pay the $750, then in 18 -24 months if they decide my wife is related to her dad, they will refund the money (no interest, of course).

A few weeks after that, I get a letter saying I can make them a settlement offer of less than the $750, and they will consider it. I ignore it. We don't owe the tax. Period.

Then I get a letter saying I am eligible for free legal aid. I don't think I need any, as this is open and shut, IMO.

I call the state to check the status of my appeal and to find out if I should accept my state paid for 'free' legal aid.

I'm at this point told that the documentation I sent is inadequate! See, I sent the HOSPTIAL birth certificate and the CHURCH's marriage certificate. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Must be state certified proof.

If I had not called, they would have ruled against me and sent me a bill for $750 tax + penalties. There would be no appeal at that point - Guilty until proven innocent.

So, now we are attempting to ammend the Petition for Redetermination. This means getting OFFICIAL government documents showing my wife is her father's daugther. My wife was born in another part of the state. She has to travel to their county office to request her official certficiate, or find a local a notary to approve her request for her 'official' birth certificate.

Proving to the state that my wife is her father's daugther has literrally taken me 10 -12 hours of my time, and they still are not satisfied. This experience has been a real eye opener for me.

I feel like I woke up in East Germany before the wall fell.

That's an unbelievable story Dave. Serfdom at it's best.

I know people have family, etc in Cali and that's why many stay there, but there is no way I could live in a place like that.

All my family moved out of California years ago and have not looked back.

My wife, kids adn I are here because all of my wife's family is here, plus I have my business.

It is depressing that my children will grow up in this environment where the state can send you a demand for payment, based on NO grounds or proof whatsoever. Seems unconstitutional to me, yet there it is.

Our choice is to fight them on their field with their rules, or pay up. Either way it is costly.

We will just have to suck it up, as we won't be moving over this. But it is nice to fantasize about.

Dave,

I'm sure things would be much simpler if you were an illegal alien.
