I think you would have to switch out to a hitch that goes between the frame rails so that the plate could flip up and you could insert your reciever ball into the hitch. (thats what i would do)
By getting a good reliable hitch that mounts that way, i wouldnt forsee any problems towing.

Im guessing you tried the usual ups and fedex. They are crazy high because of the size. did you try greyhound? I had a bumper shipped thru them at a decent cost.
