I agree. I've been thinking about buying one of these, or whatever else is available out there. I want one to mount on my Polaris Ranger for when I go thru the woods to check trail cams and feeders. Sometimes I can jump a deer or a turkey at a hill crest if I go very slow. Trying to raise my camera takes too long. A little more research is in order
I just looked at the reviews on Amazon and this product has more 1s (poor) than 5s (good); 101 vs 94. It seems to be a decent design with very poor quality control and also LOTS of complaints about slow/poor customer service. This is SO typical of Chinese made products! Was thinking of buying one but I quess I'll have to wait for a quality product.
Well, after thinking about it for a month or so, and thinking about this coming hunting season. I did a little more research on these. I read a lot of mixed reviews about the new editions (Hero 3 in white, silver, black). I didn't read much about the hero 2 versions because I was interested in the remote that the Black edition comes with. Even with mixed reviews I went with the Black edition. Am awaiting it's arrival. But, I went back to the GoPro website to read up a bit more about the cameras. I was looking at extra batteries for extended play. The reviews on battery life are nearly all bad. I mean to the tune of 98 poor, 2 OK. Even the battery bacpac has a very poor rating for battery life. And from what I've been reading (on several sites) this thing is proned to freezing up, and can only be remedied by taking the battery out of the unit. So now I am second guessing my purchase even before I receive it. Nearly everything I've read about the previous versions (Hero 2, etc.) have been good though. So, after I get her, and have a chance to try her out. I will post up my findings here. We shall see............
Here is a quick update. After reading the reviews about battery life, and wanting not to be stuck out in the field (literally) I decided two purchase a pair of two additional batteries with a charger from Wasabi. From what I had read this brand is suppose to be pretty decent, plus the price was much better. So, once I received the camera and acc., I read all manuals and went ahead and charged the battery per the directions. According to what I read on the GoPro website. To get the maximum battery life, they recommend to run the battery thru two-three full cycles (meaning run it dry, recharge, repeat). Then it should last as advertised. So far, I have used the camera three times, taking different lengths of video at different rates. Trying not to make it one continues length of video, taking videos of nothing specific, just setting it on whatever is close and letting it run to exhaust the battery. The first two times battery lasted only about 40 minutes. Just before the camera died, the battery life indicator showed no bars, yet the readout said that there was still two hours left. The readout display on this thing is really tiny. If you have poor vision, forget it. And let me tell ya, this little camera gets Very Hot. The first go around, after I charged the battery back up, I couldn't get it to turn on. I had to remove the battery then replace it before it did (freezing problem?). After the third recharge the battery life did improve, but is still far less than an hour. So I'm really not sure how much more it will improve. I have not yet cycled the new aftermarket batteries. They are rated at 1200mAH which is better than the original. I think it's like 1050mAH? After I start to really use the camera I will give another update...............

Yes. After downloading all the manuals from the website, it was the next thing I did. Brand new camera, have had it just a few weeks. Followed instructions about hooking up via USB and doing updates, firmware, etc.. Found out about cycling the batteries in the support section of the website. But anyone who has experience with lithium batteries should know this. Doing further research about the camera (after I ordered it and before I received it) is when I discovered the battery life issue on the new Hero 3 cameras, and the freezing up issues. Which mine apparently appears to have that problem as well. I could not get any response until I removed the battery. I'm hoping with some use the battery life will improve. I hope I have no further issues with freezing up. But I'm skeptical. I hope the aftermarket Wasabi's will fare better. Time will tell, and I'll update as I use the camera. I bought this camera for use during hunting season. I'm going to put a mount on my Polaris Ranger for when I'm roaming around on my property checking trail cams. feeders, etc.. I usually jump deer and turkey, and trying to grab my DSLR and drive at the same time is really a sight to see. And I am going to put mounts on my hunting blinds.
