Bear Hunt

First, thank you to Rockpick and everyone else involved in creating The Outdoors forum!!!

Found out last night that after 4 years of applying, I was finally successful in Michigan's bear hunt lottery! I'll be bow hunting black bear way up in the U.P. Between Houghton and Ishpeming in sept/oct. We will also be filming the hunt for Wired Arrow who I have recently joined. Their current work minus me will be on the Sportsmans channel this fall.

I only know what I've seen and read about black bear hunting so if any of you have some first hand experience and want to pass along some tips, I'm wide open. We will be self guided on public lands stand hunting baited sites. Hopefully I'll have some pics for ya in a couple months!

Wow, that will be a fun hunt! I've always wanted to go up north, especially into Canada, for a bear hunt. Me and my dad have been putting in for the gator quota in Georgia and the deadline is 7/31 so we find out in a couple days if we get it. 47% chance this year 100% chance next year for a tag.

I've bear hunted Michigan, twin lakes area of the UP. Black Goast bear camp, loads of fun. just remember, don't get between the sow and the cubs. I did but not by my choice, it was not a good night. still waiting to get drawn again, 3 points now so maybe next year. Good Luck!

Mom and cubs are certainly not to be messed with. A guy from my area was attacked in his tree last year by a mother that came in with cubs. Another guy I know told me that you have to worry more about the wolves than the bears in the area I'll be hunting.

I too thought you needed more points to get a tag, but I learned a lot about the system this year. My hunting buddy had never applied before and got his. We studied all of the areas and applied for the one with the highest amount of tags available and were both drawn. I also found out that another guy I know has been drawn for the area every other year for the last 5 years. If you want to hunt Drummond island, it will take 11+ points and some of the other top areas are 8+ to get the tag. The average size in our area is much lower than some of the others, but, there are a lot more bears. I would love a 500lb boar, but I will be happy with anything over 200lbs. Field judging is tough, so I'm studying as much as I can.

Appreciate the good wishes from all of ya!

Lottery? Wow, am I ever lucky to live in British Columbia. We're allowed 4 bears per year. Two in the spring and two in the fall. Not to mention the 3 deer we're allowed to take and even open season on immature bull moose. Anyway, hope your hunt goes well!!

I've been reading about BC bear hunting since I was a kid. Hope to make it up there someday! Our bears are moving south pretty quick, I may live long enough to see the lottery go away. We also have lottery for elk which is real tough especially if you want a bull. We can take two bucks (one must have at least 4 pts on one side) and does kind of depend on the area. Where I'm at it's 5. Most I've taken in one season is 4 and it still didn't last me all year!!! Thanks for the good wishes, good hunting to you as well!!

Hey Remingtonry, just wanted to say congratulations on the bear tag and getting on the Sportsmans channel. When I watch tv, rarely, it stays on the hunting shows. Anyway I'm just curious as to how you got into the hunting show business? I would love to be able to work in some sort of job like that. I'm still in college and spend every chance I get out hunting. Just wanted to know how you got noticed by that show or how you made it happen.

Congrats on drawing that bear tag! Sounds like a fun hunt. I grew up in bear country most of my life and never once pursued one.

I've been fortunate enough to work in the hunting industry and love what I do. I have been involved in a few professionally filmed hunts (me being the guide) and it definitely makes things a little interesting and some times difficult. I'm planning on doing some filming on a few bow hunts as soon as these bucks start stripping there velvet down here.
