I have had zero problems off roading in mine and mine was a 5 speed. Going to a six speed at the moment.

Autos are easier. Manuals aren't bad with proper gearing and half a brain. I don't do mud just trails/rocks/whatever else but i don't have to touch the clutch in the explorer (5.13's 35"s). Looking forward to building a doubler...but that's for another thread

I think it is more of what you are comfortable driving...Personally I would drive a manual over a auto any day they just seem more capable because you can rock them easier and such.

in the dunes i love manual cause you can just put it in 2nd and kind of crawl out of the sand if your getting stuck a little. but i love my auto. so funn, but it shifts like crap in the loose sand. 1st 2nd 3rd 2nd 3rd 2nd 1st 2nd. all when im flooring it and drifting it. i know my tranny hates me when i go to the desert. but for mud i would just say mans. cause then you can pick a gear and stick with it!

definitely manual for a mud truck. you can easily get a truck unstuck by dumping the clutch in first and reverse. manuals don't do it the same.

my buddy has a jeep liberty with auto shift (like and old three wheeler manual shifting with no clutch) i've never drove it. i wonder if it would be the best of both worlds.
