4x4 engagement
Well, that is debatable if you should have to back up, but I do it just to make sure that it is fully unlocked. My parents 96 3/4 ton blew a hub, and the dealer told us it was from that one hub not unlocking....don't know if that is true or not. I have always had 4x4 and have always backed up, just out of habit. My jeep recommended it, and it had the same style of center locking hubs. Hope this helps, better to be safe than replace the hub...very expensive!!!
f150deerhunter,
You don't need to back up to unlock your front hubs. They are splined to the front axle shafts and stay conected. Your driver side axle shaft is fixed to the differential case and the passenger side axle shaft is the one that disconnects to allow free wheeling.
Just drive and go.
