what to check before lift?
what to check before lift?
gonna be putting a 6" lift on my 95 150(4x4, 5.0, 4r70w trans, 3.55 or 3.73 gears can't remember, 3" body lift, 33" tires) but just wanted someone with more experience to let me know what i should keep an eye out for or check/replace before & after its lifted and how big i can go on the tires before having to regear or beaf up the trans. i figured it would be good to replace the ball joints, steering joints and u-joints but dunno anything to look at other than that
gonna have your wheels off and hubs apart so why not repack wheel bearing grease. lube anything that has zerks. wipe grease on rusty parts like suspension frame brackets. being a 95 I think you are doing the right thing by replacing anything with rubber like the ball joints, steering ect. because your going to get her aligned(how ever you spell that) so you want to have the truck nice and tight.
You should have an E4OD, not a 4R70W. They didn't come out until the 97s.
Your stock gearing is barely acceptable with the 33s, anything larger requires new gears. If you go with 35s 4.56 gears is the minimum, and if you go larger you're going to want 5.13s. Whatever you do don't beef up the trans to run bigger tires. All you're doing is masking the true problem and just creating more problems down the road. When I had my 97 F150 I smoked the trans because of running larger tires without regearing. I tried to beef the trans afterwards and it was on its way out again 20k later when I traded it.
Now on the front axle keep in mind that it will only live with 33s on it. Any larger and you'll begin breaking axle shafts. If you keep the front end open you might have a chance, but if its locked you'll snap them like toothpicks.
As for stuff to change/check while its being lifted.....there really isn't anything. Everything that would need replacing isn't any harder after the lift is on.
Just make sure that you buy a long arm lift. You would not believe the change the long arms make on the OBS trucks.

i've had a lot of people question the transmission but i assure you it is a 4r70w, same trans as my 94 lincoln mark viii. i got a kit in a trade, no extended arms but will probably fab some up when i get a chance
powerstroke73 You should have an E4OD, not a 4R70W. They didn't come out until the 97s.
4R70W Applications:
o 1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
o 1993-2003 Ford F-Series
o 1994-1997 Ford Thunderbird
o 1995-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
o 1995-2004 Ford Crown Victoria
o 1996-2001 Ford Explorer
o 1993-2004 Lincoln Town Car
o 1994-1997 Mercury Cougar
o 1995-2004 Mercury Grand Marquis
o 1997-2004 Ford Expedition
o 1997-2001 Mercury Mountaineer
o 1996-2004 Ford Mustang
my '95 has the identification platein the side of the transmission that says "4R70W" and its original
i'd replace any of the rubber bushings with poly ones. extended radius arm kits are fairly cheap. dont forget to get a dual steering stabilizer and extended brake lines... for 35's, 4.56 gears would be fine if you dont do much towing, im leaning toward 4.88's in my truck because i do alot of towing, 5.13's would be too steep for 35's on the highway, you'd run way too many rpms... i'd do gears first then worry about trans later
