Cost is dependent on a number of factors. Main question...what do you want to do with your truck? That is what really determines what suspension/drivetrain you need.

exactly what code said. for example, on a big mud bogger or a rock crawling truck, you'll want a solid axle for sure. however, for a long travel prerunner truck, an independent front end is preferred.

What are you wanting to do with your truck?

Do you really need it?

Do you have the money, time, and fab. skills?

Do you feel comfortable cutting your truck up? The front crossmember either needs to be cut out, and the frame reinforced, or you'll need at least 8'' of lift to clear it.

Im working on a SAS on my 99 right now.

Im doing 1 ton axles (check out the build thread link in sig)

Now ill speak about everyone talking about the money involved. Its not really as expensive as most would think.

you can run leaf springs all around, use crossover steering, find good 1ton axles perferrably with gears you need in them. You will either have to lift it enough to avoid hitting the old suspension crossmember or cut the old crossmember out and make a new one. To avoid hitting it you will need around 8" of lift. This lift can be made using all spring or drop hangers and smaller lift springs. You will need DOM tubing for the steering and sway bar (or you can use something else there)

My truck is gonna be MUCH taller than 8" its gonna be pretty far past that mark and 4 linked and im having a shop help and its gonna be costing a tad over 4k.

You have to cruise classafieds, online forums, and local 4x4 stores looking for deals. Buying USED saves alot. If you do it yourself you will also save money, the only reason im not doing mine myself is, space restraints and 4 link. i cant do a 4 link myself too much geometry id need to practice that for years to fully understand it.

If you only go for 8" of lift your D-shafts might be ok, if not its not too expensive to have them lengthened. Im gonna be running somewhere in the ball park of 15" of pure suspension lift, then the 3" body lift and 40's.

This whole swap done with leaf springs can be done by yourself for under 3k.
