If I do it in 4wd and get stuck, I've got no where to go now. When it starts to get a little deep or rough, I've used 4 hi on the fly and kept my momentum to get out. THe only thing is that it makes a really loud noise when the front wheels get locked in on 4 hi. But it works.

Generally, best way to go about it, would be to hit it in 4x4, giving you the momentum and not forcing you to use the shift on the fly (I hate using it for the exact reason ya said, that loud popping. I still come to a complete stop to click it in and out of 4. Old habits i guess... heck I MISS manual locking hubs !
Anyways, hit it in 4hi (helps keep wheel speed up, allowing tires to self clean) get through it, and if it was nothing, go back through in 2.
Thats usually what I do anyways, especially when your the only full size truck out there ! You'd be surprised how stuck our trucks can get ! I have had buddies in Yota/truggy's geared to high heaven, running 40"+ tires not even budge me before. Our trucks are PIGS !

Either way, got yourself a real nice truck there. Keep takin care of it, and it otta treat ya right. Stoked to see your next mud pics
