Shift Fork Broken

My 4wd Broke and i took it to the dealer. To get it fixed and it ended up being the shift fork. I know this has happened to other people threw searching but what i am unclear about is why this happens.

just driving in the mud not hard on it at all just moderatlly going threw some mud.

hmm... i have a buddy whose shift fork broke one time, (03 5.4L Scab 4WD) but i know for a fact that he beats on it regularly w/ a 9in lift and 37's... don't know why yours broke...
